CARPAL TUNNEL OPERATIONS

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
This is a condition where a nerve gets
trapped in the front side of the wrist. It causes aching, pins & needles, burning
sensation and later numbness and loss of dexterity in the Thumb, index, middle
and part of ring finger. It is often worse at night or early morning. The
troubling, burning symptoms may seem to improve in severe CTS when the nerve
fibres die off one by one.
The diagnosis can be made made by examination
by your doctor by demonstrating numbness at the tips of three and half radial
side fingers and reproducing the tingling in these fingers by acutely bending
the wrist in for about 1 minute. In doubtful situations a Nerve Conduction Test
is needed to confirm the entrapment. (Tingling in fingers can also happen when
the nerve is trapped at its origin in the neck by a slipped disc in young or
Spondylosis in the older patients.)
Treatment.
In mild to moderate cases it can be improved
by wearing a splint ( search Carpal tunnel splint on ebay/Amazon) or Ibuprofen
like tablets.
Cortisone injection.
If splint, medications etc are not working,
Cortisone injection is a reasonable option for those who do not like operation.
It can give good relief for a length of time. It is a good option in pregnancy where the condition can improve
after delivery. It works best in mild and moderate CTS
We do this injection for NHS patients and
privately.
Operation.
Operation to ‘untrap’ the nerve usually cures
the condition. It is done as a day case under local anaesthesia. The initial
injection to numb the area is ‘stingy; but after this there will be no pain at
all during the operation. It takes about 20 minutes.
