It is caused by tightening of the pulley in front of the bone at the base of the finger through which the tendon bending the fingers slide up and down.The tendon develops a small nodule which when passing through the tight pulley causes the click and pain. It starts of as a pain in the base of the finger in front. As the pulley gradually becomes more tight there is click and pain, worse after a period of rest. The typical trigger occurs when the finger is stuck in the bend position and when you use force to straighten, it suddenly ficks open with pain as the nodule squeezes through the pulley. It causes aching, pins & needles,burning sensation and later numbness and loss of dexterity in the Thumb, index, middle and part of ring finger. It is often worse at night or early morning. The troubling, burning symptoms may seem to improve in severe CTS when the nerve fibres die off one by one. The diagnosis can be made made by examination by your doctor by demonstrating numbness at the tips of three and half radial side fingers and reproducing the tingling in these fingers by acutely bending the wrist in for about 1 minute.
